My first admittedly incomplete SMiLE assembly was in 1987, following a friend sharing his efforts with me. The quest for the best versions of the tracks and the best running order for the album reached a milestone with the 2011 release of the SMiLE box set, with most of the tracks here deriving from the crystal clear mono mixes contained therin. The overall structure, American Gothic side one and Elements Suite side two, I owe to Domenic Proire and his book, Look, Listen, Vibrate, SMiLE! A recent sound system upgrade spurred me to revisit the album, making a couple of final changes which now seem obvious, and sonically upgrading it to 320kps. This completed and sonically upgraded version I believe shows the work in the best possible light, as a worthy follow up to Pet Sounds, and even it's superior.
